Heart Health Month
It is officially February, the month of love and heart health! Did you know heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States? Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease.
The good news? Heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to create opportunities for people to make healthier choices. The YMCA has several beneficial programs to help members stay healthy all year long including personal trainers, group exercise classes, and the TOO (taking on obesity) Group.
And if you're up for a challenge, on February 23rd is the annual Heart Throb 5k in Vigo County. This race will take place right around the YMCA in Fairbanks Park. With the turn of weather we have had, it is the perfect opportunity to get off the couch and start walking - or running, at the Y. Register today at heartthrob.itsyourrace.com. If you register by February 9th the cost is only $20 and includes a custom t-shirt.
If you're already on top of your own heart health, and would like to make a difference in the community, here are a few friendly tips:
- Encourage families to make small changes, like using spices to season their food instead of salt.
- Motivate teachers and administrators to make physical activity a part of the school day. This can help students start good habits early.
- Ask doctors and nurses to be leaders in their communities by speaking out about ways to prevent heart disease.
