Through its Redevelopment Commission, the City of Greencastle will break ground on the new Greencastle YMCA this spring. The facility is being built in partnership with the YMCA of the Wabash Valley and the Putnam County Hospital. This project fulfills a multi-decade dream of the community.
Located on the east side of Greencastle on South Calbert Way, the site provides easy access for residents of Greencastle and the entire county.
The Y will feature 59,725 square feet of recreation space including three basketball/sports courts, three exercise studios, a walking track, a fitness area filled with a wide range of exercise equipment, a child watch area, a teen room, and ample support space such as office space, restrooms, family locker rooms, and storage. The gym spaces are set up to accommodate basketball, volleyball, pickleball, and futsal.
The Putnam County Hospital space of 11,270 square feet will allow for a wide range of medical offerings for the community.
A large community room and teaching kitchen will allow both the Y and hospital to offer a wide range of educational programs. Community groups will also have access to the space to offer programs.
The 14 acre site allows for plenty of parking and outdoor recreation area.
The project is expected to serve families from across Putnam County with over 50,000 visits expected each year. Services will be offered for a wide range of age groups from children to seniors.
- For Families – Safe and affordable after school childcare, reduction in learning loss in their children through participation in summer day camp, and the ability to share quality time doing fun activities.
- For Children – Kids can plan in a safe, healthy, and active environment. Programs to let kids explore interests and gain self-confidence by participating in classes, summer camps, and sports.

Construction will take about fifteen to sixteen months depending on weather and any supply chain issues. The project is expected to open in the fall of 2024.
